We are constantly looking for innovative technologies to make our products as sustainable as possible. As a result, we have found that by manufacturing our access matting using renewable resources and sourcing sustainable forest certified wood we can be a part of the longevity of viable and healthy forests.

Our view is healthy markets drive healthy forests. For example, if a certain type of tree is becoming scarce in the forest and our solution is to conserve that species by simply stopping to use it, we are then left with a result of no industry driver to continue to plant that particular tree.

This means that because there is no longer an economic demand, forest managers will no longer plant that tree type. This is scary to think about, because of the important roles that trees have in habitat and species diversity. By losing the reforestation of a certain tree type due to a conservation mentality, we risk losing valuable microclimates. This conservation type effect is most commonly seen in privately-owned forests. As a player in the wood procurement industry, we are responsible to encourage private forest owners to maintain healthy forest practices and to see the value in protecting and properly managing these lands. We can do this by purchasing wood that comes from sustainable forest management certified vendors.

As of 2012, 50% of Canadian forests had certification for being sustainably managed by one or more of three globally-recognized certification systems.

Our goal is to work toward having 100% of our lumber suppliers come from a globally recognized certification system. Although our products only play a small part within the forestry industry, by supporting responsible forest conservation we can help to make big changes and strengthen our overall commitment to the environment.
